Fractional CTO and engineering leadership

Senior technology leadership, part-time. For companies that need a CTO's judgement and a team that delivers, before a full-time hire makes sense. Based in Utrecht, working with companies across the Netherlands.

As fractional CTO

Own the technology strategy and roadmap, make the big architecture calls and represent tech to the board and investors.

As interim engineering lead

Lead the team day to day: delivery, hiring, 1:1s and the processes that make shipping predictable.

As founding engineer

Before there is a team: build the first version hands-on, and lay the technical foundations the first hires build on.

Most startups need a mix. We agree up front which hat comes first, and shift as the team grows.

Technology strategy

A roadmap that follows from the business goals, with clear build, buy and partner choices.

Build and lead the team

Hiring, team structure and coaching, so engineering grows without losing speed.

Ways of working

Lightweight process: planning, code review, releases and quality that fit your stage.

Architecture and vendors

Sound technical decisions, and a sparring partner when choosing platforms and suppliers.

Bridge to the business

Translating tech for the board and the business for the team: budgets, risks and progress.

Hand-over

When the time is right, help hire and onboard a permanent CTO or tech lead.

What does a fractional CTO do?

A fractional CTO takes on the CTO role part-time: owning the technology strategy and roadmap, making the key architecture decisions, building and leading the engineering team, and representing technology to the founders, board and investors.

Fractional CTO, interim engineering lead or founding engineer: which do I need?

If you need direction, a roadmap and someone to face the board, start with the CTO hat. If the team is there but delivery, hiring or process is stuck, start as interim engineering lead. If there is no team yet, start as founding engineer and build the first version. Most engagements move between these as the company grows.

How much time do you spend with us?

Typically one to three days a week, alongside your team, for six months or more. We agree the rhythm up front and adjust it when your needs change.

Do you work on site or remotely?

I'm based in Utrecht, the Netherlands and work with companies across the Netherlands: on site for the moments that matter, such as planning, workshops and the team, and remotely in between.

What experience do you bring?

As Head of Engineering at 4Industry I grew engineering from 5 to 30 people and helped take the product from zero to five enterprise customers. After ServiceNow acquired 4Industry, I led the two-year re-platforming of the product as Engineering Manager, across three teams. At Nuno, as fractional CTO, I took releases from once every other month to weekly. I also co-founded Wishly, where I build the hardware and software myself.

Can you help hire a permanent CTO or head of engineering?

Yes. When the time is right I help define the role, interview candidates and onboard the person who takes over, so the hand-over is smooth.

What does it cost?

Engagements are priced per day, based on the number of days a week. Send an email with your situation and you get a clear proposal, without obligation.
